What is this medication for?

Triamcinolone belongs to the family of medications called corticosteroids. Triamcinolone nasal spray is used for relieving nasal symptoms of perennial and seasonal allergies such as itchy, stuffy, and runny nose. It works by reducing inflammation in the nasal passages.

You will start to notice an improvement in your symptoms within the first couple of days of using this medication. It takes one week for the full effects of the medication to be noticeable. If your symptoms do not improve after using this medication for 3 weeks, or if your symptoms get worse, contact your doctor.

Your doctor may have suggested this medication for conditions other than those listed here. As well, some forms of this medication may not be used for all of the conditions discussed here. If you are not sure why you are using this medication, speak to your doctor. Do not stop using this medication without consulting your doctor.

Do not give this medication to anyone else, even if they have the same symptoms as you do. It can be harmful for people to take this medication if their doctor has not prescribed it.

What form(s) does this medication come in?

Allernaze is available as:

  • metered-dose pump spray (nasal)
    • 50 micrograms (µg) per spray
Some medications may have other generic brands available. Always ask your doctor or pharmacist about the safety of switching between brands of the same medication.

How should I use this medication?

The usual adult starting dose (for those aged 12 and older) is 2 sprays in each nostril once a day. Your doctor may change the dose as needed. The dose may be decreased to one spray in each nostril once a day once the desired effect is obtained.

For children 6 to 11 years of age, the usual starting dose is one spray in each nostril once a day. The maximum dose is 2 sprays in each nostril once a day. Your doctor may adjust the dose to best suit the child.

For children 2 to 5 years of age, the usual starting dose is one spray in each nostril once a day.

The use of this medication for children under 2 years of age is not recommended.

Gargling and rinsing your mouth with water after each dose may help to prevent hoarseness and thrush (fungal infections in the mouth).

Shake well before using. Do not blow your nose for 15 minutes after using the spray. Keep spray out of your eyes.

Many things can affect the dose of medication that a person needs, such as body weight, other medical conditions, and other medications. If your doctor has recommended a dose different from the ones listed here, do not change the way that you are using the medication without consulting your doctor.

It is important to use this medication exactly as prescribed by your doctor. If you miss a dose, use it as soon as possible and continue with your regular schedule. If it is almost time for your next dose, skip the missed dose and continue with your regular dosing schedule. Do not use a double dose to make up for a missed one. If you are not sure what to do after missing a dose, contact your doctor or pharmacist for advice.

Store this medication at room temperature, protect it from moisture, and keep it out of the reach of children.

Who should NOT take this medication?

Do not use this medication if you are allergic to triamcinolone acetonide or any ingredients of the medication.
