What is this medication for?
This is a combination product that contains two medications: aliskiren and valsartan. Aliskiren - valsartan is used to treat high blood pressure. It may be used alone or in combination with other blood-pressure-lowering medications. This medication usually starts to work within 2 weeks of starting the medication.
Aliskiren belongs to a group of medications known as direct renin inhibitors. These medications reduce blood pressure by blocking the actions of a chemical (renin) that is involved in increasing blood pressure by causing blood vessels to constrict and the kidneys to reabsorb salt and water. Valsartan belongs to a group of medications known as angiotensin II receptor blockers and reduces blood pressure by relaxing blood vessels.
This combination medication may be prescribed:
- as initial therapy to lower high blood pressure
- to make dosing more convenient for people who are already taking both of these medications (aliskiren and valsartan)
- to provide additional therapy for people already taking aliskiren or valsartan
