What is this medication for?

This is a combination product that contains two medications: aliskiren and amlodipine. Aliskiren - amlodipinThis medicatione is used to treat high blood pressure. It may be used alone or in combination with other blood-pressure-lowering medications. People may notice an effect on their blood pressure within 1 to 2 weeks of starting the medication.

Aliskiren belongs to a group of medications called direct renin inhibitors. These medications reduce blood pressure by blocking the actions of renin (a chemical that is involved in increasing blood pressure by causing blood vessels to constrict and the kidneys to reabsorb salt and water). Amlodipine belongs to a group of medications called calcium channel blockers. These medications lower blood pressure and reduce demands on the heart by relaxing blood vessels, making it easier for blood to flow through them.

Your doctor may have suggested this medication for conditions other than those listed here. As well, some forms of this medication may not be used for all of the conditions discussed here. If you are not sure why you are taking this medication, speak to your doctor. Do not stop taking this medication without consulting your doctor.

Do not give this medication to anyone else, even if they have the same symptoms as you do. It can be harmful for people to take this medication if their doctor has not prescribed it.

What form(s) does this medication come in?

Tekamlo® is available as:

  • tablets
    • 150 mg aliskiren and 5 mg amlodipine
    • 150 mg aliskiren and 10 mg amlodipine
    • 300 mg aliskiren and 5 mg amlodipine
    • 300 mg aliskiren and 10 mg amlodipine
Some medications may have other generic brands available. Always ask your doctor or pharmacist about the safety of switching between brands of the same medication.

How should I use this medication?

The starting dose of aliskiren - amlodipine will vary depending on other medications you are taking and how high your blood pressure is.

The usual starting dose is 150 mg aliskiren and 5 mg of amlodipine taken by mouth once daily. The maximum recommended dose is 300 mg of aliskiren and 10 mg of amlodipine once daily. Aliskiren - amlodipine may be taken with or without food, but it should be taken the same way every day. Swallow the tablets whole with a small amount of water. Do not chew or crush the tablets.

Many things can affect the dose of medication that a person needs, such as body weight, other medical conditions, and other medications. If your doctor has recommended a dose different from the ones listed here, do not change the way that you are taking the medication without consulting your doctor.

It is important to take this medication exactly as prescribed by your doctor. If you miss a dose, take it as soon as possible and continue with your regular schedule. If it is almost time for your next dose, skip the missed dose and continue with your regular dosing schedule. Do not take a double dose to make up for a missed one. If you are not sure what to do after missing a dose, contact your doctor or pharmacist for advice.

Store this medication at room temperature, protect it from light and moisture, and keep it out of the reach of children.

Who should NOT take this medication?

Do not take this medication if you:

  • is are allergic to aliskiren, amlodipine, or to any of the ingredients of the medication
  • has have diabetes and is are also taking ACE inhibitors (e.g., enalapril, lisinopril, ramipril) or ARBs (e.g., candesartan, losartan, telmisartan)
