What is this medication for?

This combination product contains 2 medications: acetaminophen and codeine.

Acetaminophen belongs to the group of medications called analgesics (pain relievers) and antipyretics (fever reducers).

Codeine belongs to the group of medications called narcotic analgesics.

This medication is used to treat mild-to-moderate pain associated with conditions such as headache, dental pain, muscle pain, painful menstruation, pain following an accident, and pain following operations. It is also used to reduce fever.

Your doctor may have suggested this medication for conditions other than those listed here. As well, some forms of this medication may not be used for all of the conditions discussed here. If you are not sure why you are taking this medication, speak to your doctor. Do not stop taking this medication without consulting your doctor.

Do not give this medication to anyone else, even if they have the same symptoms as you do. It can be harmful for people to take this medication if their doctor has not prescribed it.

What form(s) does this medication come in?

Tylenol® with Codeine No. 1 is no longer being manufactured for sale in the USA.

Some medications may have other generic brands available. Always ask your doctor or pharmacist about the safety of switching between brands of the same medication.

How should I use this medication?

The usual recommended dose is 1 or 2 tablets taken every 4 hours as required. The dose should be adjusted according to amount of pain experienced. If the codeine content of the tablet is 60 mg, the usual recommended dose is 1 tablet every 4 hours as required. Do not take more than 360 mg of codeine or 4,000 mg of acetaminophen in 24 hours.

Acetaminophen should not be taken for pain for more than 5 days, unless directed by a doctor.

Many things can affect the dose of medication that a person needs, such as body weight, other medical conditions, and other medications. If your doctor has recommended a dose different from the ones listed here, do not change the way that you are taking the medication without consulting your doctor.

It is important that this medication be taken exactly as recommended by your doctor.

Store this medication at room temperature, protect it from light and moisture, and keep it out of the reach of children.

Who should NOT take this medication?

Do not take acetaminophen - codeine if you:

  • are allergic to acetaminophen, codeine, or to any of the ingredients of the medication
  • are a child being treated for pain after certain surgeries (e.g., tonsillectomy, adenioidectomy)
