What is this medication for?

Ketorolac belongs to the family of medications known as nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs). There are 2 strengths of ketorolac eye drops. The 0.5% strength is used to relieve itching and swelling of the eyes caused by seasonal allergies and to reduce swelling and pain following cataract surgery. The 0.4% strength is used for the relief of pain, burning, and stinging of the eye after eye surgery.

Your doctor may have suggested this medication for conditions other than those listed here. As well, some forms of this medication may not be used for all of the conditions discussed here. If you are not sure why you are using this medication, speak to your doctor. Do not stop using this medication without consulting your doctor.

Do not give this medication to anyone else, even if they have the same symptoms as you do. It can be harmful for people to use this medication if their doctor has not prescribed it.

What form(s) does this medication come in?

Acular® Preservative Free is available as:

  • eye drops
    • 0.50%
Some medications may have other generic brands available. Always ask your doctor or pharmacist about the safety of switching between brands of the same medication.

How should I use this medication?

Following cataract surgery: For the treatment of swelling, the recommended adult dose is 1 drop of the 0.5% solution in the affected eye(s) 4 times daily beginning 24 hours after cataract surgery and continuing through the first 2 weeks after the operation.

For the treatment of pain and burning/stinging, the recommended adult dose is 1 drop of the 0.4% solution in the affected eye(s) 4 times a day for up to 4 days.

For seasonal allergic conjunctivitis: The recommended adult dose is 1 drop 4 times a day.

Ketorolac eye drops should not be administered while wearing contact lenses.

Follow the instructions of your pharmacist or doctor on proper use of the eye drops. To help prevent infections, do not touch the applicator tip to your eye or to any other surface. Wash your hands before using the medication.

Many things can affect the dose of medication that a person needs, such as body weight, other medical conditions, and other medications. If your doctor has recommended a dose different from the ones listed here, do not change the way that you are using the medication without consulting your doctor.

It is important to use this medication exactly as prescribed by your doctor. If you miss a dose, administer it as soon as possible and continue on with your regular schedule. If it is almost time for your next dose, skip the missed dose and continue on with your regular dosing schedule. Do not administer a double dose to make up for a missed one. If you are not sure what to do after missing a dose, contact your doctor or pharmacist for advice.

Store this medication at room temperature, protect it from light and moisture, and keep it out of the reach of children.

Who should NOT take this medication?

Do not use this medication if you are allergic to ketorolac or any other ingredients of the medication.
